What kind of microphones do we use for Minnesota video production? Our go-to mic is the Tascam DR-10L wireless label microphone. We’ve got four of them and have had amazing luck with them. The reason we use these wireless mics is because then our subjects are free to move about a space without having to worry about where the microphone is at all times.
We also always have a backup microphone mounted on the camera such as a shotgun mic. We do this because sometimes we get really engaged subject who’s gesturing a lot and sometimes will thump their chest, which can hit the lapel mic and cause an audio spike. Or maybe a piece of their hair will scrape against the microphone and then you lose that bit of audio.
So our main microphone is the lapel mic, with a back up mic on the camera. We don’t typically use boom mics unless we are trying to capture specific audio in the environment. Let me know if you have any other specific questions about microphones or video production in the Twin Cities, and I’d be happy to help!
